philosophy is instruction for those who view poetry as luxury. i'm not trying to say that you shouldn't delve into your consciousness, nor feel proud and honorable and be excited to actually think––you should! i'm just saying (and call me an aesthete if you must) that there is more to feel, and more to see and celebrate than realizing on your own what many men 600 years ago thought out loud. you can be as powerful as humankind was then, and feel the same wonder they did even though you're just as insignificant, despite that shrine you built yourself on facebook.

been getting into jazz lately. one of the people i'm really digging is dorothy ashby, who i know, funnily enough, through that high llamas' song "dorothy ashby". (they are a neat band to listen to if you don't know them, also, though i think i have about 7 of their albums and they all sound exactly the same.) dorothy ashby: jazz harpist. pretty wild. she's really known more for the album "afro-harping" (which is much more like the second video i posted--a little more funk/soul/r&b inspired) but before that happened, she was doing a lot of classic arrangements. wee.

today i ordered a copy of "the jazz harpist," her album from 1957, which usually goes for about $60 in a "very good" condition. i got it for $5 claiming to be in the same state. we'll see how it really plays. eep.

i always thought this was a brave single to release for capitol, but i suppose things were better and more free even in 2001. pj harvey scares me, but she sounds wonderful here, which was the non-lp version of the song. i'm not sure if there was ever a proper release of it.

shit, man! i had the best weekend i've had in a long, long time. i saw so many friends! i danced, i gardened, i drank, i walked so far and for so long and i ate like a king. i'd like to think in some multi-verse, bacchus got a little touchy-feely with cupid. in turn, he then shot his wine-soaked love-drunk arrow into my chest and gave me the power to enjoy myself like half-man-cat, half-god. that's actually exactly what happened.

twin sister is a band i only knew through free downloads from pitchfork, but this past saturday, daniel got me a ticket to see one of several brooklyn vegan christmas shows with this dudette and dudes headlining. i was really just stoked to see widowspeak open for them, but the show blew my mind.

now i have this e.p. of theirs, color your life. puts me in a place somewhere between listening to felix hernandez's rhythm review on saturday mornings, and the band broadcast. when she hits that note on "and i felt touch" -- guhhhhh ––

kurt wagner has––in his own marble-mouthed way––released albums with the endlessly changing lambchop lineup since 1994. that's something else. (they are on merge records, which also holds my heart close with my dear friend adrian orange and her band, thanksgiving, which you will recognize from yesterday's post.)

i never really find music challenging, yet as a fan of tall dwarves, r. stevie moore, and countless psychedelic bands, i have to say lambchop can give me a bit of a hard time sometimes. in college i purchased lambchop's thriller from tower records which is a much slower, more macabre and spaced out record than oh (ohio). then it was mostly got because i knew a casual fan, and i don't think i was as concerned with enjoying it as i was with knowing it. (being 18 is hard.) now there's a slender, waning contrariety between these things for me: to truly know it is to wholly love it.

i just need some music to come to me. now hoping tom waits will stroll in with a sliding slow blues track off his early years album that i remember falling asleep to when i shared a room with my older brother.

i can always use some suggestions. xo

i've failed over and over to capture a photo of my bench. but with that new blue addition (thanks to my godmother for sending it to me!), i wanted to try again. this morning the light looked really nice, so i rolled over and grabbed my camera. here's what i got. that sprawling plant in front is called meezoo and should flower. i bought rea one, too, and hers has had two (i had one for just a few days oops), but mine is giant. i guess they are adopting their traditional gender roles*.

neat notebooks. neatbooks? yes. that's right. i will make as many bad word jokes as i please.

notebooks are something that i've always been drawn to (for drawing har har) but i sometimes find them to be too small. i prefer a basic letter size sheet of paper, even if i only use half of it or so. for a while i was stockpiling them and still using looseleaf paper anyway. argh! notebooks in themselves are a very cool medium, i think. a wrapping on one of the most simple necessities for those who need to create.

i found out some sad news while playing google just now. grant mclennan of australia's the go-betweens passed away of a heart attack in 2006. what a bummer. dude was only 48. he's the blonde-ish man seen as the lead in these videos.

i put two songs, including their biggest hits, "cattle and crane" and "streets of your town" which were written about 6 years apart. staying power. also added two covers! they seem to be the only go-betweens covers in existence, actually, which is both sad (get with it) and cool (because ivy is pretty neat, and nada surf is in my top three favorites).

here's a fun fact to know and tell: (copied and pasted from wikipedia because i am lazy and there isn't really any other way to put it) "[september, 26th, 2009] brisbane city council announced that a four-lane traffic bridge, previously known as hale street link, would be re-named as go-between bridge in the band's honour, following a popularity poll."

on sunday, rea, kelly, and i drove to the hudson valley to pick some apples. we also stopped in sugarloaf, which is a tiny village of artisans somewhere in orange county. we bought candles from a man who makes them in little hut, and i bought soap with a leaf from a spruce inside. now i smell like the wilderness.

a few months ago, my little big brother showed me this video (top) by nicky wicky b (aka 23dirtybird1). i was amazed. this kid, who is 17 (just kidding, he's 12) has been making songs over beats from the internet (i presume) by himself, and with his friend a-flame (aka ritzcrackers777) for a while now. they are really the best. i often find myself singing these songs throughout the day. i've even got some friends hooked (hi sandie). his video for "your eyes" has reached 1000 views, so he made a thank you video that is effectively a grammy award speech. but he should be proud. he'll do big things, i know.

had a lot of sick days this year. currently holed up in the midst of one, in fact. the difference is that i'm not doped up on muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories this evening. had some time to dig, followed some links and ended up reading some of my old blog posts, including this one featuring a wonderful clip from the film "the girl from ipanema" (1966) evidently based on the song by stan getz and joao gilberto (as getz is clearly visible in above clip, along with astrud singing, and cal tjader on vibes). here's a recap:

did y'all know that when joao gilberto and stan getz were preparing to record their first album, joao recommended his wife, astrud, sang with them, though she had never performed professionally? she has such a soothing voice.

i watched some more recent videos of her singing, and while she sounds great, she is still so... i don't know? doe-eyed? uncomfortable? vacant? it doesn't matter; not when you have an instrument like that.

on second thought, maybe i'm missing it. maybe she is too cool for me to even comprehend, like stan getz's cardigan. ..."

i also found this in an email to someone: "fast times at ridgemont high is a dumb, slow movie. but there are a lot of long legs that i choose not to avert my eyes from like i would have when i was younger. just kidding. i just meant when my parents were in the room."

i imagine i also wrote that on a day-quil* bender, because why would i have watched that movie? really.

i was discussing my love of miniatures with rea the other day. i suspect it goes back to the very intricate, lovingly produced train set at the morris museum. it had tunnels and animals and landscaping that rivaled the mansions in dey hill.

anyway, tilt shift has become very pervasive throughout pop art these days. it's available on every dumb ol' cell phone, and even within lenses for slr cameras (which this was evidently shot with). though i'm sometimes irritated by the reproduction of fine art processes in digital photography, i really like what they did here. i mean, you can't shift a motion picture film camera to my knowledge. so, hooray for new innovations. just stop with the photo filters all the time, you nerds.
